Left At Lula

Copyright Shannon Boshears

“You got to sing it like you mean it,”
he said on the front porch swingin’
and he only spoke when he was spoken to
I said, “tell me about the time Son House played bottleneck slide
And Mississippi got the blues.”

“It was a long dark, dusty road
Robert Johnson sold his soul
And John Hurt, he was a friend of mine.
There was a hellhound on my trail,
But my soul wasn’t never for sale
And if the blues is what you want to find.”

Chorus
“Take a left at lula
Mississippi Delta
Ask Big Jack Johnson
On your way outta Helena
Get your hot tamales
And some mojo too
Baby, you can follow me
Back when Mississippi got the blues”

“Well, I ain’t gonna lie to ya now,
if you go down 61 South
in the alley, back behind the jail
If you’re there when the moon’s just right
You can hear him on a Saturday night
And he’s playin’ like he’s raisin’ his bail”

Repeat Chorus

“Now, some people gonna call me a fool
Even though I ain’t had no school
I was educated in the blues
But there’s gonna come a time real soon
When it all comes second hand news
And this Mississippi witness is thru.”

Repeat Chorus

Great Gosh Amighty
Great Gosh Amighty

Black Mascara

Copyright Shannon Boshears

Well, she comes from outta the swamp somewhere in Louisiana
Where the trees overrun with moss and the river runs green
She comes out after dark and drink cream d’banana
Some say she’s worth the fee, she says “I got everything that you need”

Chorus
She was wearin’ black mascara
And platform shoes
Draped in apricot feathers
And a fake tattoo
Baby, you should know better
But you can’t refuse
You should never say never
Not to Black Mascara

Well she knows the old scrolls and follows the ways of the planets
She gets paid to rock and roll down in New Orleans
You can take her out on the town, but never take it for granted
Every line on your hand she reads, what she sees you ain’t gonna believe

Chorus Repeat

She was wearin’ black mascara
She puts it  on in the mirror
You should never say never
Not to black mascara
She was wearin’ black mascara
Baby, you should know better
You should never say never
Not to black mascara

Hush Yo’ Fuss

Copyright Shannon Boshears

You better come in here, baby
Sit down and lend me your ears
You better come in here, baby
Sit down and lend me your ears
You know the way you’ve been talkin’
You could sure make a deaf man hear

You been runnin’ that thing all day and every night
You been running that thing all day and every night
Tellin’ me everything I’ve done wrong and nothing ain’t right

Chorus
You better hush yo’ fuss
You better hush yo’ fuss
You better hush yo’ fuss
You better hush yo’ fuss
You better hush yo’ fuss, baby
Sho’ nuff forget about us

When I first met you, baby
You didn’t say much
When I first met you, darlin’
You didn’t say much
Now you keep goin’ on ‘bout this and that
And such and such

Well, you shake your head
While you stand with your hands on your hips
Well, you shake your head
While you stand with your hands on your hips
I’d cover my ears but I could still see your lips

Chorus Repeat

Please, please baby put me out my misery
Please, please baby put me out my misery
But when I’m six feet down I can still hear ya fussin’ at me

Chorus Repeat

Change Things

Copyright Shannon Boshears

Chorus
We gotta change things if we wanna keep living
We gotta change things if we’re gonna get thru
We gotta change things before the whole world goes up in flames
We got some things we gotta change, that’s what we gotta do

Hurricane
New Orleans
See the man
Down on the street
Wavin’ his arms
Yellin’ at the T.V.
Send me some help
C’mon and get me free

Chorus Repeat

Jet fuel rain
Poisonous trains
Suicide bomber
Overnight fame
Gettin’ grades and guns
Got ‘em all on the run
Take a look at my face
You won’t forget my name

Chorus Repeat

Good Guitar

Copyright Shannon Boshears

I’ve climbed enough mountains
To get me over
Any kind of high place in the road
I fought my battles just like a soldier
So, don’t mistake me for being cold

Chorus
Don’t do me no favors
Don’t roll your eyes
Six strings and my savior are all I need to get by
The only thing that’s gonna take me far
Is the grace of god and a good guitar

I once was holy, but I realized
That kept me separate from who I was
Cause I’m a common girl from the start
With calloused fingers and an achin’ heart

Chorus Repeat

Sometimes I’m playing
With my eyes closed
That’s when I’m praying
With every note
When there’s no answer and the wait is long
That’s when it helps me
To sing this song

Chorus Repeat

The Sun Shines

Copyright Shannon Boshears

I’ve seen the lightning
I’ve heard the thunder too
You can get soaked to the bone when it’s raining on you
It’s been way too long
Since I felt the sun comin’ on strong

Chorus
But today, the sun shines
Not a cloud in my mind
Everything is true
Just like me and you
I can feel the wind blow
Rollin’ down my window to the world
Let this road unfurl
I saw yesterday thumbin’ a ride
And I just went on by
Cause today, the sun shines

You bring your blanket
I’ll get my guitar too
We’ll get down on the ground sing a song or two
It’s been way too long
Since I felt love comin’ on strong

Chorus Repeat

It’s been way too long
Since I felt the sun comin’ on strong

This Town Brings Me Down

Copyright Shannon Boshears

Well, ya never can begin again
In the town that you’re livin’ in
Cause they know the true color of your hair

They know everyone ya ever dated,
They know every table that you waited
They’ve seen all the ugly clothes you wear

Chorus
Livin’ in this town brings me down
Livin’ in the town brings me down
They’re gonna keep you around
Till you can’t get off the ground
And it brings me down,
Livin’ in this town

They know the street that you’re livin’ on
They come around when they know you’re home
And they’re gonna bang on your door all day

They say, “We know you’re gonna go far”
They slap their hand down on the bar
And they roll their eyes as they’re walkin’ away

Chorus Repeat

Livin’ in this town brings me down
Livin’ in this town brings me down
Livin’ in this town brings me down
Livin’ in this town brings me down

Well, I don’t know where else to
I don’t know where else to
I don’t know where else to go

The Honeymoon Is Over

Copyright Shannon Boshears

Chorus
The Honeymoon Is Over
“I do” turned into “I don’t give a damn”
We got drunk in love
And somehow wound up sober
I’ve packed your bags
The Honeymoon Is Over

Well, they tied six beer cans onto the back of our truck
They wrote “Just Married” and wished us the best of luck
We weren’t three miles down the highway
When you said, “You’re gonna do things my way”
I said, “Put this in reverse and back this up!”

Chorus Repeat

Well, this honeymoon suite just turned out to be sour
I like you less and less, by the minute and by the hour
Thru the doorway I got carried,
But you’re not the one that I married
I took a bath right after my wedding shower

Chorus Repeat

Gotta Lotta Nerve

Copyright Shannon Boshears

You’ve gotta lotta nerve
To act the way you do
You’ve gotta lotta nerve
The things that you’re putting me thru
You’ve gotta lotta nerve, yes you do
You’ve gotta lotta nerve

You’ve gotta lotta nerve
To come all up in here
Lay down the law and then you just disappear
You’ve gotta lotta nerve, my dear
You’ve gotta lotta nerve

Bridge
Didn’t your momma raise you right?
She must’ve left you crying in the middle of the night
You ain’t no better than anyone else
I’d be willing to bet that you prefer it by yourself

You’ve gotta lotta nerve
More than I can stand
I grit my teeth and I’m shaking my head
You’ve gotta lotta nerve, my friend
You’ve gotta lotta nerve

Bridge repeat

Repeat 3rd  verse

You gotta lotta
You gotta lotta
You gotta lotta nerve

Behind These Bars

Copyright by Shannon Boshears and Walter K.

All my clothes smell like cigarettes
And all my friends are alcoholics
And every bartender is town is family
We play here every weekend
While we’re thinking what we could’ve been
And I’m up for parole, they ain’t never gonna set me free

Chorus
And I’ve spent half my life behind bars
And these songs are all of my scars
From the skin that built up thick around my heart
And the only signs of life in here are the ones that advertise beer
And I’ve got six barbed wire strings on my guitar
From spending half my life behind these bars

The door is heavily guarded
And everyone here gets carded
Or you get busted for breakin’ and enterin’
I got hundreds of numbers on napkins
And I hold on to ‘em just so I’ll have them
Cause everyone needs protection every now and then

Chorus Repeat

Bridge
I was told I could make some easy money
And singing songs on weekends sounded fun
But these days I don’t think that it’s all that funny
And now this ball and chain won’t let me run

Well, it’s last call for alcohol
Then it’s lights out for every one of y’all
And I’m gonna count my tips and blessings until then
So much for good behavior
Don’t forget to tip your waiter
And you can come back here tomorrow night and visit me again

Chorus Repeat

Meet My Maker

Copyright Shannon Boshears

When I meet my maker
Ain’t gonna be no need to pray
No need to seek forgiveness
On that chosen day

When I meet my maker
He’s gonna take these chains from me
I’m gonna hand him my worries
Someday I’ll be free

Chorus
We gonna walk together
We gonna walk together, down that road
We gonna walk together
We gonna walk together, down that road
We gonna walk together, when I meet the Lord

When I meet my maker
Ain’t gonna be no time to tell
During the day or darkness
Save me from this hell

Chorus Repeat
